What happens as we age?
Many people believe that it is normal to be in pain the older you get. You are in pain because you have osteoarthritis and there is nothing you can do about it.
However, many people age without any pain despite having osteoarthritis! In fact, several studies show that osteoarthritis is not just a degeneration, but an ADAPTATION over time. The body adapts to gravity and the many things we do in a day!
Yes, some people have pain and do have osteoarthritis, but most are asymptomatic (no pain) and still have osteoarthritis!
However, is it justifiable to do nothing since osteoarthritis is normal...stay sedentary? Absolutely not! Over time, the composition of our muscles, bones and joints change!
Bones start to decline from the age of 40 onwards... especially in women (0.5% to 0.7% higher).
Did you know that 40% of our total mass is muscle?
We lose between 2% of muscle mass per year (depending on the study) from the age of 30 onwards and 3 to 8% every 10 years.
We lose even more muscle strength with age, namely between 1.5% and 5% per year from the age of 40 onwards.
Degeneration accelerates from the age of 40-50. You lack balance and risk falls, a blow to the head and oops, no fun. Health problems develop gradually... heart problems, respiratory problems, osteoporosis, etc.
So how can you slow this down and even improve your health?
A good night's sleep, eating well and getting plenty of exercise!
